The system of counterweights that operates your garage door consists of torsion springs. Over time, the pressure and weight of the door can cause these to weaken and even snap. Because they play an essential role in opening and closing your garage door, it is crucial to service and repair them on a regular basis. You could try to extend the life of your torsion springs a bit, for example, by dousing them with motor oil and mopping up the excess, but it wouldn't be a good idea for you to try to adjust your extension springs on your own, as they are under an extreme amount of tension.
